Warner (same thing) has always owned the title. I'm told they also found paperwork recently that revealed that JACK AND THE BEANSTALK is not PD as previously thought, but through a chain of rights from RKO to WB, is actually a Warner title. However, I don't know how a case like this works and I think the damage is probably done.

UCLA did a very nice restoration of MEET CAPTAIN KIDD several years ago, using the original Red-Yellow-Blue separations that were discovered by Bob Furmanek in England. Because of the weird photochemical color scheme used by SuperCineColor, apparently it was a real task for Cinetech, the lab involved with the restoration, to get the film to look good, but the final result was quite pleasing.
