Does anyone know why Kirk Alyn wasn't enlisted for the series?

According to Gary Grossman's book, SUPERMAN, SERIAL TO CEREAL, Kirk Alyn was never seriously considered for the role in the TV series. Thomas Carr, who co-directed the first Superman serial and most of the early TV episodes, said they looked at over 200 actors for the role before finding George Reeves who immediately became their first choice. Carr said he liked Alyn but didn't think his features really looked like Superman. Reeves' square jaw and Roman profile (not to mention his acting credits) made him a much better choice.
