Maybe he did like the Chaney's did - sorta? Lon Chaney Sr. vs Lon Chaney Jr. In this case Jr. is not so. They have two completely different legal names (Sr. is Leonidas Frank Chaney and Jr. is Creighton Tull Chaney). In this case the movie studio decided to change Creighton's screen name to Lon Chaney Jr. to cash in on a link with his father's fame.

The "Sr" added to Lon Chaney's name was a convention adopted primarily by monster mags to distinguish him from his son in articles -- and it caught on with fans, unfortunately. Lon Chaney never adopted the "Sr" himself, nor did anyone refer to him as "Sr," because his son's name was actually Creighton Chaney during Lon's lifetime. These days, writers usually refer to the father as Lon Chaney and the son as Lon Chaney, Jr.
