The NY Times called it "charmingly sentimental but ultimately pointless" in a mixed-to-mildly-negative review. The critic did seem to think that the two female leads were quite good. I hadn't planned on a theatre viewing of either this or MONSTERS VS. ALIENS but with all the apparent '50s nods and hommages, I may have to reconsider.
It also received a negative review in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, but the critic was obviously and aggressively ignorant of genre films of the period, and the same will probably go for most other reviews from critics under forty. It's too bad that Stephen Hunter is no longer regularly reviewing films for the Washington Post, because he's one of the few who'd probably understand it.
