In R.L. Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll", the good doctor is unable to replicate his formula, because of some impurity he didn't know about in the original batch... but, these days, with modern forensics and chemical anaylisis, someone could get a full breakdown of what was in the original drug by examining the doctor's remains. (In the best tradition of CSI) Imagine... if you will... some grad student coming across the formula, and then posting it on the internet as the next "X"...the next designer party drug.
