But seriously, I studied primatology in the early '90s. When I worked at a zoo, I was there the day our capuchin, Smiley, bit a guy's finger off. Primates are nothing to be trifled with. As a matter of fact, much of the stereotypical zoo behaviour you see, like large cats pacing their enclosure, is indicative of mental health issues. Animals as a rule don't do well in captivity. I am really saddened to see this news story. I don't know exactly what happened. I hope for the best the victim. I hope at some point there are answers and I would like to think this behaviour was precipitated by some outside circumstance rather than just the chimp being in a bad mood. People don't understand how strong primates are. By the way, chimps are apes, not monkeys. The apes are gibbons, chimps, orangutans, and gorillas. Other primates are monkeys. Usually, if it has a tail, it's a monkey. Just some useless trivia for you guys.
