Saw Lyndon Johnson from about 50 feet away. And had an odd encounter with a vice-president. This would be sometime mid-60's to early '70's. I was walking down 4th Street in Louisville, middle of a weekday (had just come out of a matinee) a police car rolled slowly by, lights flashing, and behind it was a top-down convertible with Nelson Rockefeller sitting up on top of the backseat, waving at...no one. There was no crowd at all, just a few mid-afternoon shoppers strolling the boulevard. I, of course, recognized him, stepped to the curb and waved back (and I don't think a single other soul joined me). Rocky was evidently so pleased that someone had noticed him that he broke into a huge smile, pointed right at me and shouted, "Hey, there!" I quietly said, "Hi," and continued waving at him. That evening, the local news reported that, yes, he had been in town, but nothing about his lonely one-man parade, nor any explanation of just what the heck he thought he was running for.
