Telegonus, you pose some good questions. I don't think there will ever be another Karloff, Lugosi, etc mainly because it is such a "Director's Medium" nowadays; John Carpenter's This and Copolla's That. Actors were the drawing card before Michael Myers. And the previous response to the heavier use of FX is on the mark, too. The fairy tale aspect seems to be gone, and the wonder one had of these non-familiar places is gone because of the media being so good at showing us the world (the type of things that made movies, James Bond, Tintin, and Uncle Scrooge so fascinating!). Imagination seems to be lacking in general- at least when it comes to fantastic film.
