I think there is a large prejudice and hate against Tom's religion, and so they don't like him, or anything he does. Seems a story about the 3rd Reich even, people would see the wrong in having these views. Same with Battlefield Earth, which was not an Oscar type film, but was a fun rolliking adventure. Seems Travolta doesn't get treated so bad, but his film about the motorcyclists was terrible, and I found it racistly offensive with that Martin guy.

About the first point there is always the report when Das Boot opened in LA and the death stat about U-boaters appeared, the audience gave a huge round of applause

About the second, Travolta doesn't go out of his way to be a bigot to people in public who have mental health issues, people take psychiatric medicine and view them as junkies.

I am looking forward to a huge comedy watching Tom Cruise act, every time I see parts of the film in ads I have a huge laugh. Though since Bryan Singer is a good director, I doubt it will ever come close to matching the wonder and awe of Battlefield Earth, that movie was epic stupid (and one I love to watch).
