Congratulations, Ray - I simply can't wait to watch the third "Zé do Caixao" installment. In some of the published stills, you looks exactly like José Mojica Marins when he was the Guest of Honour in France, at the Paris Festival of Fantasy & Horror Movies. It was - unfortunately - the only time I met him "in person"...
After the show, we had a dinner in a classy restaurant in Neuilly, the "select" suburb of Paris. I remember the astonishment of the maître d'hôtel in seeing José entering his restaurant, with his hat, cape, and long nails... At first, the "serveur" was reticent to approach our table; however, as we were speaking of movies, it becames clear for him that José was some "extraordinary" guest, and a star - perhaps even more for us than in his native country at this time (1975). And guess what happened ? at the end of the dinner, the solemnel Maître d'H asked José to sign the "Golden Book" of the restaurant... Souvenirs, souvenirs.
My only regret is that the Jury of the festival didn't give him - or his movies - an award. This year, I was the Secretary of the Jury, and I talked about José and his films. But it wasn't my role, of course, to influence the members of the Jury - just make suggestion. In my mind, José Mojica Marins was - and of course still is - an authentic genius. He would be probably pleased to know that since, French television, on the Canal Plus channel, has presented his two first "Zé do Caixao" movies, in one of their "prestige" programmes - and of course, in their original versions, totally uncut, without any commercials and interruptions, with French subs. Like the true classics they are.
