Universal merged with International Studios in late 1946 and the new studio heads, Spitz & Goetz, threw all the low-brow stuff under the bus. Many contracts were cancelled and series such as the horror films and Sherlock Holmes pictures were discontinued. The studio aimed for high-brow status with the Mark Hellinger films and a Robert Montgomery unit. However, when expenses far outpaced ticket sales Spitz and Goetz were more than happy to have Abbott and Costello, Ma and Pa Kettle, and Francis the Talking Mule in their stable of moneymakers!! The monster characters were a bit passe, though they made a worthy team of opponents for Bud and Lou. Post war audiences were, however, less thrilled by hobgoblins and it took the cold war and the vogue of science fiction to initiate a new trend for Universal-International.
