The fact that he retained his sense of humor, which was a distinct part of his personality, was something that made it all the more creepy for me. It felt like his friend realized the horror of his situation, was having trouble facing it, and so was falling back to humor in order to mask his pain and tension. This is an extremely human thing to do and made it all the more effective, at least for myself.
