Oh, I have to agree with carl on this one... definitely the worst miniature shots in any film. I don't think the producers gave a crap about being truthful to Verne, or even producing something worthwhile at that point...
The second most awful special effects I would have to nominate an itallian film called "Star Pilot." At a couple of points in the film, the cast goes on a spacewalk, and they use a trampoline between two mockups of the spaceships to simulate zero-g.
As far as makeup is concerned... have you ever stop framed through The Excorcist? NOT the wonderful work by Dick Smith, but those subliminal cuts of "the devil" are pathetic... like the makeup a 3rd grader would do for Halloween.
