Well, I wish I could say better things of it, but first impression reveals GROTESUERIES to be a decidedly mixed bag. For me the biggest-blow is that the RED SPECTER is among the weakest of the transfers. It's soft, and dark, and looks like a rather armature mastering of a print that could have yielded much more were it done well. The music choices are also pretty dubious (at one point French Can-Can music is played seemingly due to French actresses dancing).

There are also a few instances of faux video titles standing in for films ones on some titles. I remain uncertain whether this way done to replace missing ones, cloak that they were cribbed from another source, or to discourage piracy.

There are some cool things, a very creepy, nifty "pin-hole" animated NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN (1933) short, are bizarre Billy Bletcher short THE FRESH LOBSTER, in which is tormented by a giant lobster after having one for a late-night snack, and a fun, spooky TOM & JERRY (not the cat and mouse) cartoon "WHAT A NIGHT" that looks terrific (but has a faked title-card), and a lengthy trailer to Maniac (1934).

There's also some stuff many would regard as filler, a collection of scenes from the Chaney PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and the 1928 expressionistic FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (both which have been better represented on three other DVDs).

It's also, as I suspected a DVD-R, though a professionally authored one.

I'll add more if I see better stuff as I go along.
