Clooney's Alzheimer's joke was crass, you bet. But, like a decent human being should, he then apologized to Heston and his family. Matter closed.

Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken... but Heston & his fellow NRA board members never apologized for deliberately holding their gun convention so close to the site of the Columbine Massacre almost immediately after that horrific crime occurred. (This in a country that, for quite a while, stopped running any movie -- even ones made in the '70s -- showing the WTC towers, out of sensitivity to the events of 9/11.) The NRA convention could easily have been rescheduled for a different venue a bit farther away. But no. They couldn't even do that out of respect for a grieving community. It was a Heston move every bit as crass and ill-mannered as Clooney's lousy stab at humor.

That said, do I think Heston was a "bad person" or an unredeemable "jerk" for that action and subsequent failure to apologize? Absolutely not. He was a human being, and human beings -- even nice, thoughtful gentlemen as Heston by all accounts apparently was -- occasionally make stupid judgment calls.

For years to come (should the Supreme Being in her wisdom allow), I will continue to enjoy Charlton Heston's many entertaining films and performances.
