From the Earth to the Moon. The flying rocket is a stationary prop against a blue background (probably the sky). In some shots, the flames shooting out below move about, exposing the attached gas pipes off to the side. A meteor that threatens the ship is a wire-suspended metal ball with holes everywhere. The effects guys filled it up with 4th of July sparklers, set the whole thing on fire, and kept swinging past the ship's winow. In some shots, the sparks enter the cabin, destroying the illusion of there actually being any glass to protect the crew from being sucked into space.
