In terms of Heston's performances (and I liked a number of his movies, but not necessarily because he was in them), I think WILL PENNY was one of his best ever, as it was so unlike his usual persona and his played a loner cowhand was so subtle, low-key, and genuinely poignant. Thought he was a great Richelieu in THE THREE/FOUR MUSKETEERS, and his TV version of A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS was good, too. However, he was a terrible Sherlock Holmes in THE CRUCIFER OF BLOOD. Not long after he announced his Alzheimer's diagnosis, he did an interview with Peter Jennings, which Jennings said would probably be the last Heston would ever give (at least broadcast). I don't know whether it actually was, but you could see how age--and the disease- had taken its toll on him. That was the last time I ever saw him anywhere. I read he wanted to play Roy Scheider's role in JAWS, too.
