The first time I saw him wrestle, I couldn't believe I was actually seeing the guy I had watched wrestle on television at the Olympic Auditorium in L.A. when I was a kid. As a teenager I lost interest in wrestling and in later years, only thought of Mil during periods of nostalgic conversation with my brothers. So, about 35-40 years later, I'm reading a newspaper article about Mil wrestling in Pico Rivera (a few miles east of Los Angeles) and I'm thinking - could this possibly be the same guy I watched as a kid? The guy had to have been well into his 60s! A few phone calls later, I find it is indeed the same Mil Mascaras. A friend of mine and I head out to the matches and are completely blown away by the lucha show we see, topped off with a main event featuring my masked hero. Holy smokes! What a night! I started seeking out his local appearances and found he was wrestling 3 or 4 times a year in southern California. Finally, at a show in the City of Industry, California, I got a chance to meet Mil, probably 40 or more years after I saw him for the first time on an old black & white TV, and had my picture taken with him. Much to my wife's chagrin, the elaborately framed photo now hangs conspicuously in our family room and is one of my prized possessions. For a guy nearing or at 70 years of age, he still looks like he could break me in two.
