Based off the situations you've noted that were actually filmed, you could have one of your characters actually invent the famous moving eyes gag!

That's one possibility. It would work better had Lost in a Harem that has the gag, not been made in 1944 and the story I'm writing takes place in early 1948.

The other possibility is that Bud Abbott recognizes the picture from his film Lost in a Harem. Yes, I want to use the actual prop from the actual film, which is why it's so important to identify some actual film that has the gag.

As it is, I have taken the mask from Genius at Work and have Bela recognize it after Bud Abbott notices eyes staring at them from it. I'd actually prefer a portrait, though, since it's over a fireplace mantle in the House of Doom.
