Wow, do I have to disagree there. POPEYE is "toon style, " yes; the others - especially Raymond's & Foster's work - fits your demands. And takes the prize. Ever see any Sundays?

Yes, and many if not most were simplistic. Look, I'm not saying comic strips were crap. Some, like the Prince Valiant you posted earlier, are well done. But overall, comic strips (ie newspaper strips) were generally done with simple art and little content due to size/space/time restrictions. I dug up some examples of what I'm talking about:

Notice how much empty, vacant whitespace there is? Lots of newspaper strips looked like that.

And if we look at the comic books themselves, let's compare some Golden Age material to some Silver and Bronze Age material.

These are from Action Comics #1:

Notice the crude, primitive pencils, the lack of detail, the crappy shading (Superman looks dirty with all those needless lines), the stiffness and lack of backgrounds. It's amateurish. Now compare that to some Silver/Bronze Age work:

And so on and so forth. The GA was primitive as a whole compared to what came in the later ages. This doesn't mean that GA comics are crap, just that they were not as sophisticated, as well developed, as well done as comics in later ages.
