Robbins, however, was a great cartoonist. I love all the weird angles, jutted jaws and twisted knees and elbows. With Robbins, you always knew what was going on in the story, and his run on The Invaders is an unappreciated gem.
Spot on , Chris. I love Robbin's work esp the Invaders and his brief run on Captain America. George Tuska and Don Heck too. THE Irom Man artists as far as I'm concerned. Tuska was a great dependable artist,(something some of todays prima donnas could learn from). He could work in any genre and Roy thomas has stated that anytime George took over a book the sales went up. Okay, I know popularity isn't necessarily a sign of good work but guys like Tuska were the backbone of the industry for years. Good solid story telling without any frills and an instantly recognisable style. Even Colletta couldnt make him look bad, which is fortunate as that's who Marvel always seemed to team him with.
Why did they keep doing this ? Sal Buscema and Mike Esposito were/are both fine artists on their own and with other people. Together their work just looked rushed. For me they sum up a lot of the second division books Marvel put out in the 70's but they were teamed together again and again.

Don Heck is an artist that I didnt like at first but grew to admire very much. . I dont think his style was right for comics, or at least the quality of comics printing that was around in the 60s/70s. I'd love to get my hands on some original Heck pages because I think a lot of his fine pen work was lost on cheap pulp paper. I don't know that any editor ever told him this though. I preferred him inking himself but again he was given a lot of inkers on his Iron Man run who didnt suit him, Esposito again and Frank Giacoia. Inked by Wally Wood, his stuff looked fabulous. Lots of professionals rated Don, Jack Kirby could have had his pick of inkers but chose Don for one of his portfolios. The industry treated him badly and I've never forgiven the Comics Journal for the hatchet job they did on him.
