And just the fact that Ditko is responsible for designing about 80% of Spidey's classic foes should tell you how important this guy was to the character.
Well said, the greatest rogues gallery ever (apart perhaps from Batman). And that perfect costume.
I love John Romita's work and he is a far more versatile artist than Steve Ditko. JR could draw just about any book and his women were gorgeous. If he couldn't ink it himself, he made a great team with Jim Mooney and Gil Kane. He co created Kingpin, Rhino and a few others but they arent as memorable as Doc Ock, Sandman, Vulture in my opinion.
I'm fortunate that I read them all in order up til Ross Andru stopped via British reprints.
The switch from Ditko to Romita didnt bother me, the Goblin's unmasking was such a great story and the book was always fun when Stan was writing it but Ditko's contribution cant ever be over estimated.
It was just so wierd. As Martin Goodman reasoned " People dont like spiders" and Ditko managed to capture that revulsion/fear & at the same time make me care more than I ever have about any other fictional character.
The tilting point where they lost me was the Spider Mobile!
Ditko's up there with Eisner, Kirby, Adams, Wood, Anyone in my book.
