I haven't done a side-by-side, but it would appear that all the commentary materials originated from the laserdisc release of ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS. I believe the Byron Haskin input was originally presented separately from the commentary track, and it's now been integrated? In short, I suspect some re-editing was done but I'm not aware that anything specifically new was added. The film itself was treated to a new, high-definition transfer so it looks better than it did on the Criterion LD.

Michael Lennick's "Destination: Mars" -- his investigation into the (then) science fact that informed Ib Melchior's science fiction -- deserves consideration as Best DVD Extra.

Speaking of Ib Melchior, this release might also qualify for Best Controversy -- I understand that Ib wasn't at all pleased to find the movie packaged as "Byron Haskin's ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS."
