Reading David's summary of Spider-Man convinces me that giving up comics ages ago was a good thing. For some reason, writers seem to paint themselves into a corner and then later new editors and writers have to come up with something ludicrous to clean up the mess. While at DC, the Crisis of Infinite Earths was probably necessary to scrape the barnacles off their characters. But the story lines and events that came later only added to the mess. Then more subsequent clean-ups (called reboots) are necessary.

A lot of what John Bryne did with Superman I thought stupid and unnecessary (eliminating the indestructible costume and Superboy are good examples). What passes for "art" and page layouts today are horrendous. I agree, the Silver Age had the best stories and artwork.
