The FDA of late is like most regulartory agencies in an era of deregulazation: becoming toothless and neutered. That does not necessarily mean they're all populated by either idiots or Republican flunkies on the take from big business. There's good and bad in everything... like the ingredients of Diet Coke.

notes from better (and more skeptical) researchers than me on the claims:

There is a reference in Betty's rumblings to the unfortunate Jim Krossik, who died from being overwhelmed by the deadly white powder that is aspartame. Other than the loony letter itself, I can find no reference to a "Jim Krossek" under any spelling, nor does the name appear to be one used anywhere in the US. It appears to be a word in Polish or Czech. I suspect, therefore, that the late, aspartame'd Mr. Krossek is related to the legendary General Philabuster T. Pantsfree, the unfortunate recipient of that famed chain letter from years ago, who (instead of copying it by hand twelve times and sending a dollar to everyone on the list within five days) threw the chain letter away and, precisely seven days later, died unexpectedly in the Philipines when his ass fell off.
