And, just as I suspected, there's quite a bit of mis-framing, and even a dramatic bit of zooming, going on.

Just to recap the difference (BTW, my framing marks were made by overlaying a SMPTE loop, so they are guaranteed accurate):

I can see what happened already. The telecine operator framed at the 16x9 ratio, and racked the film so that the top border was in frame. Unfortunately, the picture itself was significantly zoomed in, so bottom of things are being cut off. Alas, I wish the color on my print had held up looking as good as the DS's DVD color looks (damn you, Eastmancolor!), but this is just another perfect example of why you can't judge a film by its video master.
