Yeah, in the original estuary scene, the victim (stunt man Teddy Grossman) is in sharks mouth (hidden under the water) and being pushed along towards Michael Brody (who is treading water).

Grossman, with blood oozing out of his mouth, makes a last ditch attempt to save Michael by taking him in his arms and pushing him away from the shark.

Grossman then goes under water with the shark, is presumably swallowed, and the shark swims away (as we see in the final cut of the film).

Spielberg says that the scene turned out to be too horrific. He thought it was worse than anything shown previously in the film, was in bad taste, and so he cut it.

Again, the raw footage of this deleted scene is in "The Making Of Jaws" extra on the JAWS dvd.
