Everyone knew exactly what you meant by your statement about Williams reprising his archetype police inspector turn in both of these films.
My word. Not only do you know what conclusion YOU reached, but the conclusion everyone reached. Such psychic powers. I thought that perhaps someone here might have taken this phrase "John Williams reprised his DIAL M FOR MURDER part in MIDNIGHT LACE" to actually mean what it said. Would that I had your amazing abilities. As for me--and by the way, despite your fondest wishes, I am inescapably included in "everyone"--I thought maybe Williams actually did play the same police inspector, in much the same way that Radford and Wayne played Charters and Caldicott in a couple of non-Hitchcock films following their appearance in THE LADY VANISHES. So I checked IMDb; I thought if indeed Williams had played the same character, it would be worth noting in Maltin's Movie Guide. But I found Williams played a similar police detective, not the same one, so I reported my findings here.
