An argument that comes up a lot is the supposed different heights between King Kong & Godzilla. KKvG is NOT a sequel to the 30's King Kong; it's Toho's own take on Kong. Watching the film, there's obviously no intention of trying to continue the story from the bottom of the Empire State Building. Toho created their own version to fit in with their Godzilla universe, just like Christopher Lee's Dracula isn't the same one as Lugosi played (Lee couldn't turn into a bat, for example). Even in the American edit of KKvG, doesn't 'Eric Carter' say that there's "rumors" of a great beast on the island? That's because Kong had never been seen before in this universe. Also, if you look at how the human characters react to each monster, it's obvious they were rooting for Kong. Everyone wants to stop Godzilla, and the military tries repeatedly to stop him, but Kong is never their concern.

I tend to like KKvG quite a bit myself, and prefer the Japanese version over the American, mainly because the relationships between the characters are more fully realized. In the Japanese version, the humor between the two main characters helps define them better than what we get to see in the American edit. I will admit to missing the line, "You're not Tarzan!" though.
