This film -- I'm a bit reluctant to admit -- actually scared me as a 12-year-old. Re-watched not too long ago, it still held up rather well, and I found myself tensing up in anticipation of the tentacle that comes out of nowhere to wrap around the Indian woman's neck. The transparency of the monster in the outdoor sequences didn't work as well, but the "it's sucking her blood!" sequence in the cave still held some power.

My wife liked it just fine. She has a tendency to forgive cheesy/low-budget effects if the story catches her attention, and this one certainly did.
