He had one particular three-chord thing that he seemed to like, because unless I'm mistaken he used it more than once in different movies (notably in PSYCHO and the ominous TAXI DRIVER theme). John Williams also uses it in STAR WARS, right as Han and the others emerge from their secret hiding place on the Millenium Falcon after the stormtroopers have searched it. I like to think that Williams did this as a tribute to Herrmann.
