I don't think they're "automatically" funny either. But they're not automatically unfunny just because they are profane or whatever. We can argue about whether restraint boosts creativity, but there are plenty of instances of older films and TV shows in which the creators wanted to do something "mature" or "realistic" and couldn't and felt that the results suffered because of it.

Some people have an issue with crude or obscene humor. Some don't. I guess that's what it boils down to. I think one issue with this show is that unlike the Pam Anderson Roast, this show drew in an audience of Trek/Shatner fans that may not normally watch the raunchier Comedy Central stuff and were a little unprepared for what they saw. My mother-in-law for one. Never in a million years would I recommend that she watch anything on Comedy Central prime time, particularly one of these roasts; but she has a thing about Shatner, watches Boston Legal etc. She was pretty much blind sided by this. If I have any criticism of the Roast, it would be that in the future they stick to Roastees who are likelier to draw a more "rock n roll" audience, if that makes sense.

And Takei's line was:

"It smells like p***y in here....I think."

which I found funny, not a knee-slapping howler, but cute.

Your mileage may vary
