Actually, I think that, above and beyond the psychological reasons (which are many and complex, and can in some cases be very personal), there is an aesthetic element to horror films (and comic books, as well). Simply put, the LOOK of "horror" has a special kind of beauty to it; not everyone can see past the subject matter and dismiss it as vulgar or ugly- but for those of us who DO appreciate it, nothing else comes close.(Seeing those original OUTER LIMITS episodes for the first time this year, I found the episodes photographed by the late great Conrad Hall to be absolutely breathtaking to behold). To me, the images conjured up by someone like Mario Bava or James Whale are, quite simply, high art. (Oh, and for the record: if Thor and the Wolfman fought, Thor would win the battle- but he WOULD get bitten in the battle, so later he would turn into WOLF-THOR!)
