I've had problems with disc speed compatibility since I started digitally recording. When I bought my 4x DVDR in 2004 you could still find some 2x blanks. Then my 4x machine started hating 2x discs, then it didn't like 4x either. When I got my 8x DVDR in 2005, 4x blanks were beginning to become hard to find. I ended up scooping up various 4x blanks wherever I could find them since the new 8x machine didn't seem to care. Then my 8x machine started hating 4x discs, regardless of brand. Like you, I use to experiment with different brands until I settled on one I liked. I convinced myself that the machine didn't like constantly changing the brand of disc I was using. So when I bought my 16x DVDR in 2006 and 8x blanks were still plentiful, I bought an assload* of Maxell 8x spindles and have been using them exclusively. Now I see only 16x blanks on the shelves. Hopefully, when my supply of 8x blanks runs out (very soon), I be able to switch to Maxell 16x with no problem. Confused? So am I.
