There's another documentary called SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, and it's really much more interesting than SATANIS. This was made just two years before LaVey's death; here we find a wistful, reclusive fellow who seems content in the Disneyland-style universe of his own making. A house filled with carefully re-created memories and "artificial human companions". The sensitive aesthete more than anything else. One realizes that LaVey could well have been the model for J. K. Huysmans' Des Esseintes in another age. We also begin to realize just what he means by "Satanic"...and it may not be what you think. The Johnson-Smith Catalog of Jokes, Tricks and Novelties...whoopie cushions...Batman...film noir...Jack London...submarines..."things that were fetishistic to me".
