Okay, so this is a $300 suggested retail John Ford set. It contains 24 films including the previously released Drums Along the Mohawk, Young Mr. Lincoln, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, What Price Glory? and My Darling Clementine. That's 25% of the titles included. That's a fairly good chunk of titles that you would have to double dip on in order to get the remaining 18 films. I would think that any serious fan of John Ford who would drop the $200 that this set is likely to sell for online would already have those six titles. I know that I have five of them.

It's not as bad as the first Bette Davis Collection boxed set. That included five films and three of them had already been released. The big difference is that the Bette Davis set could be purchased for about the same price as the individual prices of the two fresh movies that were included in the set.

But, the price of the Ford set is three times higher than Garbo Signature Collection which included 11 titles for a retail price of $100 which could be had online for as little as $70.

Heck, the recent Warner 10 film Film Noir Collection Volume 4 retailed at $60 and can be purchased online for about $42. And that's a great set of films! That's $4.20 per film.

Now, let's put this in perspective; What Price Glory?, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, Drums Along the Mohawk and My Darling Clementine are all available online for about $9 each. Young Mr. Lincoln is a Criterion release and will run you $23 and change. The six best titles in the collection can be had online for $68, and that includes an overpriced Criterion edition. During a deepdiscount sale the price would be $54 for those six titles.

I guess I have two points. I'm aggravated that a premium set is being released that inlcudes so many previously released titles. And, the price of the set certainly isn't in keeping with what the folks at Warner are doing with boxed sets that contain great supplementary features. Am I off base here?
