I just don't get Kubrick. Can anybody really explain to me why his films are so revered? They are plodding and lethargic and rarely contain any of the kind of spark that we expect from filmmakers of his standing. The moments that Kubrick admirers point to as being inspired appear to be contrived to me when measured against the entirety of the films they appear in. When his films have captured my interest it has been in spite of his contributions to the work. The Shining is Jack Nicholson's film. Kubrick did everything he could to destroy King's novel to the point that King felt compelled to purchase the rights back and have the story shot again. Full Metal Jacket is Lee Ermey's film. Eyes Wide Shut??? The only film included in this set that, in my opinion, even comes close to being a work worthy of a great director is A Clockwork Orange. The film is prophetic and makes a social statement that is, in hindsight, haunting.
