I watched this not too long ago. It impressed me as being more of a Biblical film than a typical peplum. My take is that these sort of films from Italy tend to be more entertaining when they focus on the exploitation angles (wicked queens, dancing girls, bizarre fights with dangerous animals, wild battles) than attempts at serious drama. I agree that the Welles presence doesn't really lift the film that much.
On heights--I was interested in how tall Goliath is claimed to be. Apparently the 9 foot height is a translation mistake--six cubits (18 inches per cubit) and a span (6 inches) which comes to 9' 6". The six cubits and a span comes from a Hebrew text from about 100 AD. But the Greek Septuagint translation of 250 years earlier, as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Josephus, put Goliath's height at four cubits and a span, which comes out to the credible height of 6' 6". Considering how much shorter on average folks were back then, Goliath would have been viewed as a giant.
What about Aldo Pedinotti? I seem to recall, if memory isn't failing me, that he was billed as 7' 6"--but circus claims are notorious for exaggeration. He was probably an inch or two below or above 7 foot--at least that is my guess.
