I never read the book so I went into watching it because first, I'm a big fan of werewolf cinema and secondly, star Laura Vandervoort. I don't know if season 2 is based on any book but has carried my interest so far. Because it is serialized you need to start from the beginning to fully understand the characters and follow the story. Don't let the fact it's on SyFy put you off watching it because it's made by the Canadian Space network and picked up by Syfy. The first season is available on DVD and BluRay. Season 1 had 13 episodes and season 2 is 10 episodes long.
(In ratings, Bitten averaged 348,000 viewers in its timeslot, making it Space's highest-rated original series of all time. Season two started off with 410,000 viewers in Canada.) It has received mixed reviews (59% on metacritic) but I enjoy watching it myself.
