It was just a 'maiden play', so to speak, so the score could still grow on me...

I do agree that the movie itself has a distinguishing quality. While it shares elements with the 50s standard, it also appears to be stepping into different areas - I was struck by the naturalistic performance by Lee Meriwether, for instance.
