Domenick, "complained for years" doesn't seem to fit the real story; nor, probably, the inference that what Browning was referring to was editing for theaters in 1931.

Rhodes covers this, but it seems to mainly stem from one comment by Browning to a friend decades later, and likely to have referred to the butchering done for TV broadcasts.

We probably can never be sure, but it may be another case where fandom has created a twisted mountain out of a little molehill.
