The way I see it Clark, we don't get a wide shot of Van Helsing and Harker at the gate like we do in Melford's version. Browning gives us a tighter shot on them so we're not seeing the entire gate like we are in the shot of the bobby. As it is with the magic of movies, they're perceived as being inside the gate even though it may have been shot from the outside. We're also not seeing the gates actually swing open so that makes it even easier. Just a simple matter of coming in closer with the camera.

We must remember this is Browning's film; we shouldn't expect he shot the gate exactly the way Melford did. Melford is telling us it's the cemetary, while Browning is telling us it's Carfax Abbey. That's how I see it because that's all the film gives me to work with.
