Tod Browning doesn't strike me as a dope. You suppose he might've noticed that little problem about editing making hash of Renfield's motivation, purpose in the story and place in the plot logic?

Like... oh... being angry at Universal for screwing up a year of his life working on the thing only to send it out half-assed? That maybe it might disappoint him enough never to want to work for that cheap outfit again? And maybe even complain bitterly to a neighbor years after the fact that the studio screwed up the editing?
