I don't really get this vibe at all.  In fact, I think it's the quite the opposite.  The line is self-deprecating... an acknowledgment that Connery always got the girl!
Having said that, I always thought that Lazenby's acting style was more a second-rate Cary Grant imitation than that of a Sean Connery doppelgänger.  It's not that the Bond producers didn't try their level best to get George Lazenby to absorb the nuances of Connery's delivery and mannerisms.  This is from an interview with Lazenby published in the the American James Bond Fan Club magazine in the Summer of 1978:

"I've certainly seen Bond pictures because I had to sit and watch every one of Connery's for days.  Before I went on mine, they used to sit me in a little screening room and I would watch them over and over again until I fell asleep.  All respect to Sean;  in fact, he should have done On Her Majesty's Secret Service.  It would have been beautiful.  He's a great actor."
