My Recent Posts
The second part of my table of ascending chronology in the release version of Browning's film, Melford's film, and the corresponding scenes of my re-cut (purist version).
Browning version
Melford version
My re-cut
Mina's "dream" sequence.
Constructed from portions of scenes
G-34 and H-12
00:37:26 through 00:38:03
Scenes G-12 through G-18
01:11:35 through 01:13:28
Scenes G-12 through G-18
00:52:21 through 00:53:19
Scenes E-31 through G-11, and E-17
00:38:03 through 00:54:29
Note: After scene G-11 (shown
immediately above), the release
version of the film repeats Browning's
slightly altered version of scene E-17
which was included earlier in its
proper place, depicting a sunset and
Dracula rising from his box at Carfax
Abbey. Apparently this re-use of scene
E-17 was necessary to avoid a jump
cut between scenes G-11 and G-19
and to cover for the movement of
scenes G-12 through G-18 to an earlier
point in the film.
Scenes G-19 through G-32
01:13:28 through 01:16:47
Scenes G-19 through G-30
00:53:19 through 00:55:13
Note: G-31 and G-32 are missing from
the release version of the film but are
not needed to maintain shooting script
continuity.
Scenes G-19 through G-30
00:54:29 through 00:56:23
Scenes G-33 and G-34
01:16:47 through 01:18:25
Portions of scene G-34 and portions of
scenes H-8 through H-12
00:55:13 through 00:56:28
Note: Since the release version of the
film has cut scene G-33 and most of
scene G-34, it is necessary to use
portions of scenes H-8 through H-12
to replace the lost footage and
maintain shooting script continuity.
Since a portion of scene G-34 remains
in the release version of the film it is
possible, or perhaps even likely, that
scene G-33 was shot as well but ended
up unused in the final edit.
Scenes G-35 through G-40
00:56:23 through 00:59:12
Scenes G-35 through G-40
01:18:25 through 01:21:58
Scenes G-35 through G-39
00:56:28 through 00:59:05
Scenes G-51 through G-67
00:59:12 through 01:00:50
Scenes G-41 through G-50
01:21:58 through 01:25:27
Scenes G-41 through G-50
00:59:05 through 01:00:57
Scenes G-41 through G-50
01:00:50 through 01:02:42
Scenes G-51 through G-67
01:25:27 through 01:27:22
Scene G-40 and scenes G-51 through
G-67
01:00:57 through 01:02:48
Note: The split between the library
scene and the upstairs boudoir scene
comes after scene G-40 in the shooting
script and in the Melford version of
the film, but given the way the release
version has been edited it works better
to make the transition after scene G-39
in my re-cut. It may be possible that
Browning made the decision to
combine scenes G-40 and G-51 during
filming, or they were combined and
re-shot for the release version, or they
were taken from a master shot of the
library scene. It is also possible that
Browning decided to delete the split
between the library and boudoir scenes
and run the two unbroken in consecutive
order, as in the release version of the film.
My re-cut would work either way.
Scene G-68 to end title card
01:02:42 through 01:14:26
Scene G-68 to end title card
01:27:22 through 01:43:16
Scene G-68 to end title card
01:02:48 through 01:13:56
Note: Since portions of scenes H-8
through H-12 were duplicated or
moved to make up for the lost footage
of scenes G-33 and most of G-34,
scenes H-8 through H-12 are truncated
in my re-cut. However, the cuts do not
damage the continuity of the shooting
script.
