I've always been surprised that Rathbone gives (IMHO) a great performance as Richard and pretty poor one as Wolfie both in the same year for the same director.
Well, I'd have to disagree about the performance as Wolf.  Sure, he goes over the top in places   But he also covers a wide range, like Colin Clive as his father, from romantic tenderness to sturdy normalcy to near hysteria.  I could see Claude Rains handling all that but not many other candidates for the part.  And as someone (Greg Mank, I think?) has pointed out, Rathbone is magnificent in the study scene reading from his father's papers, really bringing home the sense of doom and destiny that's so central to the plot.
