Yay! I'm fond of the ol' potato heads!
Several months ago I day dreamed me up a whole origin of the Sontarans.... basically I surmised that the endless Sontaran-Rutan war really got going when the Rutans unleashed a devestating biological attack on the Sontarans that wiped out all the females. That would explain how the Sontarans became reliant on cloning for reproduction, and maybe add add a bit of nobilty to their all consuming hate for the little glowing cabbages.
The way Robert Holmes wrote Sontarans, he always seemed to suggest a bit of the samurai style ethics and code of honor that would later be adapted into Star Trek's Klingons. I'm sure at least two of the Doctor Who Magazine comic strips, one harkening from the New Adventure era where Russel T Davies and the rest of the Doctor Who mafia got their professional writing start, really played up this aspect; potraying honorable and sympathetic Sontarans. I hope the season 4 Sontarans will follow that lead. Doctor Who has enough unambigiously bad bad guys!
