If so, the end, the Doctor's punishments of the family, while fantastical, I think fell in line with the dark side of the 7th Doctor

For such an oft decried era of the show, McCoy's last two season's sure do predict a lot of what has made DR WHO a suscess in the 21st century. In eccleston and even more so in Tennant, I think they found a nice balance between the driven, almiost God-like darker 7th Doctor and and the more traditional wanderer. In this instance it's no wonder the Doctor's dark side came to the fore: HUMAN NATURE and FAMILY OF BLOOD are adapted from an old Seventh Doctor novel you can read online at the BBC's Classic Dr Who web site (although they did take it down for several months for the TV version's broadcast.).
