You know, Sommers earlier films, where he COULDN't go crazy with wall-to-wall CGI and a virtually unlimited budget, aren't really all that bad. It's LITERALLY the excessiveness of VAN HELSING, like some kind of bad Tex Avery wannabe, that ruins it. Everything is just too much, and even the actors have to overdo it just to keep from disappearing into the cavernous sets.
I wonder what it would have been like if VAN HELSING had been made in the 1980s, when he would have had to do the same story with a fraction of the resources. Would a smaller scale and a need for discipline have forced him to make a better movie?
