I'm not anti-old people - Hell, I'm old myself now! It's just that after 30+ years it's jarring to see these actors reprising their classic roles. If you watch the films in order, you're going to see them young and energetic, then fast forward 30 years and their old and sedate. Which brings up another pet peave of mine in this series of films...
Why do the characters get so dull and boring? It started with Return of the Jedi. Luke went from a young bright eyed kid to a dull and monotone Jedi. Now look at the prequels. Princess / Senator Amadala - dull - monotone. Same with Samuel Jackson's Jedi (who was so dull I can't even remember his characters name). In fact all the Jedi's were one dimensional - don't show any emotions! The only one who showed any emotions was Anakin, and he was the bad guy of the films! Before he turned bad he was a dull monotone kid. BORING!
I see that happening to the returning characters in this new film. Most likely Luke will be the new Jedi master, and as the series pointed out, and his character from Return of the Jedi - he will be dull and monotone. Most Likely Princess Liea will be a Senator now - and naturally she will be as dull as Senator Amadala. Han Solo will likely be by her side, running things from his chair because he's too old to move around quickly. Harrison Ford's pretty dull himself. Did ya catch him at the last Oscar awards show? It was hard enough watching him return to the role of Indiana Jones. The only way to make these old returning characters appear vibrant is to have them jumping around via CGI like they did with Yoda. And in my humble opinion that was pretty crappy looking.
I'll probably watch the new film but like all the prequels I'll come away wishing they hadn't made them. George Lucas isn't the greatest story teller in the world. Star Wars and Empire were very good, but after that he went downhill quickly. As a director he's pretty forgettable. And of course he keeps trying to improve the films, but keeps making them worse. How about you plug up those plot holes, George? Or better yet, leave the original films alone and just remake them with an all new cast.
